The capital of Georgia, and one of the biggest cities in the US, Atlanta is a sprawling and thoroughly modern city in the heart of America’s south east.

The city is referred to as the capital of the South, reached worldwide prominence when it hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1996

With many big corporations based here, such as Coca-Cola, Delta and CNN, many people visit here for business purposes, and with one of the busiest airports in the US, it’s also a major hub for connecting flights.

However, there are plenty of reasons to visit Atlanta in its own right, with a vibrant cultural and architectural history.

Firstly, it’s quite a unique city in that much of its area is covered by an impressive tree canopy, giving it a very natural feel, and highlights include the city’s zoo and aquarium, as well as the botanical gardens, where you can walk high above the city on a specially built treetop walkway.

It’s also home to a wealth of department stores for the shopaholics out there. Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza are the two main malls, but heading to the more quirky boutiques in Little Five Points and Virginia-Highland could prove to be just as rewarding!

And while it is the home of Coca-Cola and hot dogs, Atlanta is also home to some much more upmarket food offerings, with traditional southern food such as fried chicken and gumbo must trys.

In terms of sightseeing, Atlanta was the home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and is now home to a museum celebrating his life.

Other popular sights include the Ebenezer Baptist Church and Oakland Cemetery, as well as the World of Coca-Cola attraction where you can see how the famous drink is made, and taste a few different variations.
