Flying to the USA from the UK

Here’s everything you’ll need to know when flying from the UK to the USA, including flight times and entry requirements.

Flight Times

Considering it’s such a big country, it’s no surprise that flight times to the US vary a lot depending upon your destination, with direct flights taking as little as seven hours to Boston or as long as eleven hours to Los Angeles.

There are direct flights available from a number of UK cities, such as London and Manchester, although there are indirect flights available too from other airports, which will take longer.

Entry Requirements

A Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) is in place which allows British Citizens travelling to the USA to visit for up to 90 days for purposes such as tourism and certain business visits.

If you hold a British passport which describes your nationality as a British Citizen and has the internationally recognised ePassport symbol, you should qualify for the VWP. (If your passport isn’t an ePassport you can have it upgraded by Her Majesty’s Passport Office.)

Those who have been arrested for certain crimes or who have travelled to or are a dual national of some countries such as Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen then you might not qualify.

If you don’t qualify for the VWP, you’ll need to apply for a visa from the US Embassy. It’s also worth knowing that there are some restrictions on the types of medication you can bring into the US, which you can read about here.
