The heart of South Africa, Johannesburg is an important and vibrant city which will take your breath away, with plenty to see and do.

The Apartheid Museum is a must visit and tells the story of Apartheid and what life was really like during this dark time in South African history.

For the best views of Joburg, head to the Carlton Centre, where you can go up to the 50th floor and see right across the city and beyond.

Or if you fancy a bit of shopping, head to the Rosebank area where you’ll find boutique shops and designer malls.

Ellis Park will be a must-visit for rugby fans, especially if you can catch a game, and history buffs will enjoy the living museum at Constitution Hill.

And of course, no trip to South Africa would be complete without seeing some of the exotic local wildlife.

Take a trip to the Kruger National Park where you can see all kinds of animals such as cheetahs, lions and elephants.

The currency in South Africa is the South African Rand, the time is two hours ahead of the UK, and temperatures in Johannesburg are fairly mild compared to the rest of the country, with averages of 20°C during the summer months (October to February) and 10°C during the winter (June-September).

A number of airlines such as South African Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways all fly direct from London Heathrow to Johannesburg O. R. Tambo International Airport.

Flights from London to Johannesburg take around eleven hours and arrive into Terminal A, the international terminal, which is located 21km northeast of the city centre.

The airport has its own train station which provides fast connections to Johannesburg every 12 minutes on the Gautrain.

A single the city centre will cost R152 and will take around 20 minutes (with a change at Sandton station).

Taxis are also available although we’d recommend booking one at the terminal desk.
